A lab-made that blocks IL-17RA, a docking site on cells that several inflammation-driving proteins need to trigger the overactive skin-cell turnover seen in psoriasis.

How it works

Psoriasis flares up when a family of signaling proteins called IL-17 tells skin cells to grow and inflame too fast. Most drugs in this class grab the individual signal proteins before they can act. Brodalumab instead blocks the receptor those proteins plug into, so it shuts down several related signals at once rather than just one. With that receptor blocked, the skin's overactive turnover and redness gradually calm down.

What it’s used for

Used for adults with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis whose disease is serious enough to need body-wide treatment and who haven't gotten enough relief from other systemic psoriasis medicines. Because of a risk of suicidal thoughts and behavior seen in trials, it's only prescribed through a special safety program with close monitoring.
