Combines two blood pressure medicines in one tablet: losartan, which blocks a hormone receptor that narrows blood vessels, and hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic that helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water from the blood.
How it works
Hyzaar puts two blood pressure medicines into one tablet. Losartan blocks the receptor that a blood-vessel-narrowing hormone would normally attach to, so vessels stay relaxed. Hydrochlorothiazide works on the kidneys instead, helping them flush out extra salt and water to reduce the fluid volume the heart has to pump. Acting on two different systems lets the combination control blood pressure more effectively than either drug alone.
What it’s used for
Hyzaar is prescribed to lower high blood pressure, and specifically to reduce stroke risk in people who have both high blood pressure and an enlarged heart muscle (left ventricular hypertrophy) — though the FDA label notes this particular stroke-prevention benefit hasn't been shown in Black patients.
