Delivers lab-made instructions () that teach the body to build a piece of the COVID-19 virus, training the immune system to recognize the real thing.

How it works

The vaccine is a tiny fatty bubble carrying a genetic instruction manual for one piece of the coronavirus, called the spike protein, the part the virus uses to invade cells. After the shot, your own cells briefly read those instructions and build copies of just that one harmless piece. Your immune system spots this piece as foreign and learns to recognize it, building antibodies and immune memory. The mRNA breaks down naturally within days and doesn't alter your DNA.

What it’s used for

For preventing COVID-19, not treating it once someone is already sick. Current approval covers adults 65 and older, and anyone ages 5 to 64 who has a health condition that raises their risk of severe COVID-19.
