A lab-made antibody that blocks two inflammation-driving signals (IL-12 and IL-23), calming conditions like psoriasis.
How it works
Ustekinumab is a manufactured antibody engineered to recognize one specific target shared by two immune messenger molecules, IL-12 and IL-23, which normally tell immune cells to ramp up inflammation. By latching onto that shared piece, the antibody stops both messengers from docking onto immune cells and delivering their attack signal. With that signal muted, the runaway inflammation behind conditions like psoriasis and certain bowel diseases quiets down.
What it’s used for
Prescribed for moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in patients 6 and up, Crohn's disease in patients as young as 2, and ulcerative colitis in adults.
