A lab-made that keeps certain immune cells from entering the gut lining, calming inflammatory bowel disease.

How it works

Certain immune cells use a docking tag to grab onto blood vessel walls in the gut and climb into the intestinal lining, where they can drive inflammation. Vedolizumab is a lab-made antibody that attaches to that docking tag, so the cells can no longer grip the vessel wall and get in. Because this docking system is mostly specific to the gut, the drug calms inflammation there without broadly suppressing the immune system elsewhere in the body.

What it’s used for

Used in adults with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease to reduce gut inflammation and help bring symptoms under control. Not currently approved for use in children.
