Combines a pain-and-inflammation reliever with a stomach-acid blocker in one tablet: naproxen, an anti-inflammatory that can irritate the stomach lining, and esomeprazole, which suppresses stomach acid to protect against that irritation.
How it works
Vimovo layers two different medicines into one tablet, timed on purpose. Naproxen is a standard anti-inflammatory pain reliever, but it can irritate and erode the stomach lining over time. Esomeprazole shuts off the stomach's acid pumps to protect against that irritation. The tablet is built so the esomeprazole releases first, before the naproxen core reaches the small intestine, specifically to reduce the risk of stomach ulcers in people who need long-term anti-inflammatory treatment.
What it’s used for
Vimovo is prescribed to relieve the pain and inflammation of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, in people who also need protection against the stomach ulcers that long-term anti-inflammatory use can cause.
